Quick and Easy Way to Remove Duplicate Photos on iPhone
Starting in iOS 16, the Photos app can identify duplicate photos to help you clean up your library. Here’s how. In Photos, tap Albums. Then scroll down and tap Duplicates. Photos will notify you if there are no duplicates or if it needs more time to analyze your library. Tap Select. Tap the pictures you want to merge or tap Select All. And tap Merge. You can choose to merge only photos that are exactly the same or all photos that look the same but may have different resolutions, file formats, or other slight differences. Tap Merge Items to confirm.
Photos will merge duplicates into one photo with the highest quality while combining relevant datalike captions, keywords, and favorites. Duplicates that are removed go to the Recently Deleted folder. And that’s how you can remove duplicates from Photos.
Other ways to remove duplicate photos
There are several other ways you can remove duplicate photos from your iPhone:
- Use the Photos app: Go to the “Albums” tab and open the “All Photos” album. Tap the “Select” button in the top right corner, then tap on the duplicate photos you want to delete. Tap the trash can icon in the bottom right corner to delete the selected photos.
- Use a third-party app: There are several apps available on the App Store that can help you find and delete duplicate photos on your iPhone. Some options include Gemini Photos and Duplicate Cleaner.
- Use iTunes: Connect your iPhone to your computer and open iTunes. Select your iPhone from the device list, then click on the “Photos” tab. Check the box next to “Sync Photos,” then select the folder or album that contains the photos you want to sync. Click “Apply” to sync your photos and delete any duplicates from your iPhone.
- Use iCloud: If you have iCloud Photo Library enabled, you can delete duplicate photos from your iPhone by going to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Photos and turning on “Optimize iPhone Storage.” This will store full-resolution versions of your photos and videos in iCloud and leave lower-resolution versions on your iPhone, freeing up space on your device.
