On 14th May Microsoft has accounced that they have signed a definitive agreement to acquire Metaswitch Networks. Metaswitch is a recognized leader in the development of ultra high performance, cloud native communications software. Our software solutions equip, accelerate and transform communications service and platform providers, worldwide.
Metaswitch cloud-native virtual network functions helps to run on commodity hardware in private, public and hybrid clouds. This software powers the voice, data and unified communications services of fixed, mobile and converged operators worldwide.
Why Microsoft is Acquiring MetaSwitch Networks?
The combination of cloud and communication networks will help Microsoft to serve globally using Azure. It adds depth to their hyperscale cloud infrastructure with the specialized software from Metaswitch that run virtualized communication functions, applications and networks.

Microsoft acquired Affirmed Networks on 23rd April 2020. Acquiring Affirmed Networks & MetaSwitch Networks will help Microsoft in enabling advancements in enhanced mobile broadband. With ultra-reliable low latency communications and massive machine-type communication to enable IoT at scale. 5G offers significant potential for enterprises and governments and in turn creates new opportunities for operators.
As the industry is moving towards 5G, there is a need for the operators to advance the virtualization of the core networks. And move forward towards cloud-native future.
